Microneedling in Coventry

If you are active on social media, odds are you are aware of the microneedling craze. Microneedling has been around since 1995, but the practice has been growing in popularity due to the viral craze of incredible transformations on Instagram and Youtube. Among one of the more mesmerizing- albeit unusual- aesthetic treatments, microneedling is a minimally-invasive solution which provides maximal results for abnormal pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and scarring.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, is a procedure in which a device called a dermaroller (a sterile plastic cylinder with stainless steel needles protruding 1 to 3mm from the surface of the cylinder) is rolled vigorously over the face to create many microscopic needle pricks. These needle pricks lead to thousands of microscopic wounds in the dermis which initiates the natural post-traumatic inflammatory response. As a result, collagen and elastin production increases and skin elasticity and texture improves.

The Microneedling Procedure

If the idea of thousands of needle pricks in your skin sounds terrifying to you, there is no need to worry. The area to be treated is anesthetized with topical anesthesia for 45 minutes to one hour, and punctures are merely pin-pricks which travel surface-level deep. After preparation of the area, rolling is done 15-20 times in horizontal, vertical, and oblique directions; Petechiae or pin-point bleeding which occurs is easily controlled. After treatment, the area is treated with serums contains essential growth factors which further encourage the development of new elastin and collagen. The entire procedure lasts for 15 to 20 minutes depending on the extent of the area to be treated.

After the Procedure

Most patients respond extremely well to microneedling with skin being left slight pinky a few days after the procedure. Apart from this, no other side effects have been reported. You can return to your normal schedule immediately after the procedure if you feel comfortable. You skin will be more sensitive after the procedure, therefore, it is necessary to protect your skin from the sun with SPF of 30 or higher. After the procedure, your skin works fairly quickly to produce new collagen and elastin. Within a few weeks you will be able to see an improvement in colour and texture, however, for maximal results several treatments may be required. Clinical studies have shown that four microneedling treatments of facial skin, spaced four weeks apart, significantly improve lines, wrinkles, skin laxity and skin texture.

Am I a Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling is not recommended for patients who are pregnant, have certain skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema, have open wounds or infection, or have had recent radiation therapy. Other than patients who exhibit these conditions, most adults are suitable candidates for microneedling and can see results for a number of skin concerns.

What Skin Conditions does Microneedling Treat?

Microneedling can improve a multitude of skin conditions including:

  • Acne scarring
  • Age spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Reduced skin elasticity
  • Uneven skin tone
